KKR look to maintain winning momentum vs CSK

A confident Kolkata Knight Riders would look to maintain their winning momentum after victories in their first two matches and avert the heartbreak two years ago when they take on a wounded Chennai Super Kings in their Indian Premier League match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Tuesday.

In the inaugural edition in 2008, KKR had beaten Royal Challengers Bangalore and Deccan Chargers in their first two matches - the same two sides they had beaten this year - only to see suffer defeat at the hands of CSK before crashing to a string of losses and never really recover from there.

The celebrations and jigs by Shah Rukh Khan then suddenly came to an end as KKR went on to finish sixth out of eight teams in IPL I, a story that still rankles principal owner Shah Rukh Khan and captain Sourav Ganguly.

KKR have beaten defending champions Deccan Chargers and runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore in their first two matches and would now to look not to repeat the 2008 experience by beating Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men.

The team think-tank seemed to be extra cautious this time as there have been restrained celebration from the team boss Shah Rukh even after their two consecutive wins.

"We have enough celebration in the first IPL and the hangover still remains. Hope to get some more wins and we will celebrate," said Ganguly following their facile seven-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore.

It was a clinical effort from Ganguly's men who first impressed with their disciplined attack led by Angelo Mathews and Murali Kartik to restrict RCB for 135, and then the makeshift opening pair of Manoj Tiwary and Brad Hodge ensured with their twin half centuries that KKR overhaul the target with four balls to spare.

Hodge and Tiwary's 101-run opening stand must have given Ganguly a relaxed time in the absence of explosive Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum.

In the bowling department, the pace trio of Ishant Sharma, Charl Langeveldt and Angelo Mathews have done well so far but their big challenge will come when they bowl to the likes of big hitters in Matthew Hayden and Dhoni tomorrow.

Even though Hayden is yet to be a hit form with his high definition Mongoose bat it's just a matter of good start for the opener who scored 17 in their loss against Deccan Chargers last night.

Dhoni will be hoping to forget the disappointing show by his side in their last match which they lost mainly because of a pathetic last over spell from Sudeep Tyagi who conceded 39 runs from his 1.5 overs to be replaced in the last ball of the last over by Justin Kemp.

CSK would look to sort out their bowling at the slow Eden pitch. With 8pm start, dew will also be a concern for both the teams.

Underdogs take on top dogs in Ahmedabad

The two teams playing the first ever IPL match in Ahmedabad present a bit of a contrast. The Rajasthan Royals, even though they were champions in 2008, are perennial underdogs and seem comfortable playing that role. They're the team most fans love to support after their own. They possess the tournament's fastest bowler and perhaps its most destructive batsman but, a few overseas players apart, also a bunch of boys who aren't individually threatening. Their captain, formerly the world's greatest legspinner, is now a glamorous poker player, an expert at staying in fashion and the team's chief inspiration. He spearheads Rajasthan's PR on Twitter, engaging in entertaining and sometimes frivolous banter with his mates, and he's fashioned a team in his own image, one that in his own words "plays to entertain".

There aren't any Delhi Daredevils on Twitter, unless they've been hiding in obscurity, apart from Wayne Parnell. Their players aren't darlings of the media, their owner is in infrastructure not Bollywood, and their captain, who's got into trouble more than once for his on-field temper, is sullen compared to his larger-than-life counterpart. Delhi have few frills and a low-key media presence. They are the team that shows up to get the job done, clinically, and the one most opponents will be a little intimidated by, even if they won't admit it. They have their best foreign players available for the whole tournament, their top five in the batting order is unmatched, and their Indian contingent is among the strongest. No matter who they play and where, Delhi are usually favourites

Confident Daredevils up against dejected Royals

Ahmedabad: On a high after launching their Indian Premier League III campaign on a positive note, title favourites Delhi Daredevils will be looking to carry on their winning momentum against an unpredictable Rajasthan Royals on Monday.

Semi-finalist in the last two editions of the Twenty20 tournament, the Daredevils are desperate to better the mark this time and they began their IPL III campaign in style, beating Kings XI Punjab comprehensively by five wickets at Mohali with skipper Gautam Gambhir leading from the front.

Taming the Royals, however, would be far from a cakewalk since the Shane Warne-led side, powered by Yusuf Pathan's blistering century, nearly pulled off a stunning chase against Mumbai Indians yesterday.

Gambhir, however, can rely on his bowlers who put up an impressive display yesterday, restricting Kings XI Punjab to a modest 142.

Left-arm pacer Dirk Nannes sparkled with the new ball, while Farveez Maharoof, Pradeep Sangwan, Yo Mahesh, Amit Mishra and Tillakaratne Dilshan proved decent enough to deny Kings XI a big score.

On the batting front, Gambhir led from the front with a well compiled 72 while Mithun Manhas and Dinesh Karthik gave him good support at the middle-order.

To add to Rajasthan's woes, the dangerous trio of Virender Sehwag, Dilshan and AB de Villiers are due for runs, having missed on the opportunity in the opening encounter against Kings XI Punjab.

In contrast, Rajasthan Royals, their batting line-up at least, looks more or less a one man army, completely dependent of Yusuf Pathan, who struck the fastest century of the tournament to bring his side close to a famous victory.

Chasing a mammoth 213, Pathan singlehandedly brought the Royals in sight of a victory with a majestic 37-ball 100-run knock but eventually it was heartbreak for the Shilpa Shetty-owned side as they fell short by just four runs.

Paras Dogra too shone with the bat with a quickfire 41 and gave Pathan the much-needed support from the other end.

However, if they wish to turn the tables, Royals top-order, that includes South African captain Graeme Smith and flamboyant Swapnil Asnodkar among others, needs to share Pathan's responsibility.

Apart from Australian pace sensation Shaun Tait and Dimitry Mascarenhas, the Royals bowling department lacks firepower.

Knight Riders beat Royal Challengers by seven wickets

Kolkata: Kolkata Knight Riders produced an all-round performance to score a convincing seven-wicket victory over Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League at the Eden Gardens here Sunday.

After restricting Royal Challengers to 135 for seven, Knight Riders reached the target with four balls to spare, with openers Manoj Tiwary (50) and Brad Hodge (50) sharing a 101-run stand.

It has been a promising start for the Knight Riders, who finished at the bottom of the table last year. They have now beaten defending champions Deccan Chargers and runners-up Royal Challengers in successive matches.

In their first match against Deccan Chargers in Mumbai, Knight Riders had to fight back to win a close encounter.

But in front of the huge local support Sunday, Knight Riders Sunday were clinical in their performance.

Poor start did us in: Dhoni

Chennai: Chennai Super Kings skipper M S Dhoni attributed Sunday night defeat against Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League match to the jolts they suffered in the start of the innings.

Sri Lankan paceman Chaminda Vaas unsettled Chennai innings by taking three quick wickets.

Chennai were chasing a total of 191 but all they could manage was 159 for nine.

"When you chase 190, you want a good start but we lost early wickets. And if you lose early wickets, it becomes difficult for other batsmen to chase. "It all depended on the start, that we are capable of getting. Matthew Hayden and Suresh Raina being the big hitters in top of order followed by Justin Kemp and Albie Morkel. We could have got those runs," Dhoni said after the match.

Dhoni was not happy with fast bowlers, who were hit round the park in the clash.

"In the practice sessions during the last ten days, all the bowlers did well and were accurate. This game, may be the pressure got in to them. Hopefully, they will convert what they are doing in the practice games in the reminder of the matches," he said.

He though was satisfied with the show of his spinners and lavished praise on rival batsmen Andrew Symonds and Herschelle Gibbs, who lifted Deccan out of pits with their 95-run stand.

"Spinners did well better than the fast bowlers. Two of best batsmen in Symonds and Gibbs played well and they put pressure on the bowlers. May be I could have used Suresh Raina in the 10th over or so. But it becomes very difficult when you have two off spinners in the eleven. Chepauk is not a very big ground," Dhoni said.

The skipper also supported youngsters Murali Vijay and R Aswin, who he says have a lot of talent.

"Vijay has played just one game and it is not right to decide on today's performance. He is a good batsmen and he has done well in one-day internationals.

"Ashwin has done really well on whatever the opportunities he has got. Last year also he had played a few games and whatever the games he had played he had done well."

Man-of the-match Vaas praised the batsmen of his side for putting up a good total on the board.

"First game was a bit of a bad luck. We did well today. We need to win every game and do like what we did last time and win the Cup. Today, we batted really well upfront.

"Symonds and Gibbs batted well to get 190. We were patient and batted right through out. CSK bowlers did not do any mistakes but we batted really well," he said.

The veteran paceman is also keen to be part of Sri Lanka's one-day team in the World Cup, to be held in the sub-continent next year.

"I have retired only from test cricket but I am still there for limited overs games and 20-20. I am playing competitive cricket back home. Hoping to be play the next World Cup too," he said.

Deccan Chargers beat Chennai Super Kings by 31 runs

Chennai: Defending champions Deccan Chargers roared to a comfortable 31-run victory against the Chennai Super Kings for their first win in two matches of the Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket tournament here Sunday.

After posting a huge total of 190 for four in 20 overs, the Chargers pegged the Super Kings for a fine victory following their shock defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders Friday.

The Super Kings contributed to their own downfall, first with some ordinary bowling at the death and then shot selection while chasing the total.

A touch of haste born out of anxiety saw Super Kings losing wickets early in their chase and the Chargers looked well on way to a comfortable victory.

Live Kings XI Punjab vs Delhi Daredevils IPL T20 Score and Commentary

Saturday, March 13, 2010: Today is the 2nd day of IPL 2010 season third and there will be a live match between the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) vs. Delhi Daredevils (DD). The match will start at 2000 (1430 GMT). This time DD looks much stronger in T20 matches in comparison of KXIP. Kings XI Punjab can be seen as and injury ridden team. So there is some suspense over the good

Punjab has been suffered by the absence of many players and injuries in the IPL 2010 in the T20 matches. It’s a matter of great concern as the match will be played in their hometownPunjab. Especially there is a speculation over the playing of Yuvraj Singh and Brett Lee will not play the today’s IPL T20 live match against DD. The KXIP’s IPL history too seems like a bad crime novel as they have lack of twist and turns with so much villains and no lead player.

IPL T20 cricket gained the bottom four. They were hindered last year IPL live series by Jerome Taylor pulling out and the absence of some great Australian players but the fact that plays a main role is the bad cricket by the Indian players. Delhi Daredevils have no issue of bad performance in the ground of IPL T20 series. It’s the time to perform perfectly and they are ready too for the level to dive. They have the extra-ordinary balance and their topmost player is in the team in which Daniel Vettori is the prior of the list.

In the International Cricket, DD have the opening pair, the dual power of David Warner and Tillakaretne Dilshan and AB de Villiers to follow. They feel the lack of only Ashish Nehra who is suffering from the rib injury.Delhi Daredevil is confident but we can’t ignore Kings XI Punjab as cricket is a game of uncertainty.
