Yesterday, 12th March 2010, Opening Ceremony of Indian Premiere League - IPL Season 3 took place at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
On the other hand Hyderabad’s Deccan Chargers became the surprise winners of second IPL tournament.
Due to security concerns and controversies regarding Pakistani players the excitement was quite low for this time of IPL’s tournament.
There were speculations of attacks from al-qaeda during the tournament of IPL, commonwealth games and hockey world cup which made the spectators worried about their safety.
This concern has made the authorities more apprehensive for the safety of the players as wellas the spectators.
Sharad Pawar to stay away from IPL's opening match
MUMBAI: When IPL opens on Friday night at the DY Patil Stadium with an interesting tussle between Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders, former BCCI chief Sharad Pawar will be conspicuous by his absence.
Sources said he is upset with IPL honchos. "The Mumbai Cricket Association will boycott IPL as we have been totally ignored," said Lalchand Rajput, MCA joint secretary. "Our president Pawar will also do the same," he added. The MCA is livid over not being given any tickets to the Mumbai games.
Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) president Sharad Pawar and other office-bearers of the associaton are set to boycott the Indian Premier League’s opening match at the DY Patil Stadium on Friday as they have not been given any tickets to the Mumbai games. It is already a known fact that certain circles within the BCCI are not happy with IPL commissioner Lalit Modi’s autocratic ways. This time, it looks like things have gone out of hand.
"We haven’t been given any passes or tickets for any of the games in Mumbai. We had brought this to the IPL’s notice and also written to BCCI president Shashank Manohar but our pleas seem to have fallen on deaf ears," explained Rajput. Mumbai is to host 11 matches of the IPL, besides the opening ceremony.
While Pawar is sure to be invited in his individual capacity, the cold shoulder to MCA officials and its affiliated clubs has apparently upset him. "It is indeed a big step for Pawar. But he is concerned and is expressing his displeasure through this boycott," stressed Rajput.
The MCA has been flooded with phone calls from former Test players, Ranji captains, first-class players and affiliated clubs’ officials who had all got passes/tickets for all BCCI games, including the IPL matches, during the first edition. "We got 20% of the tickets and passes during the opening IPL season, which are meant for former and present players and affiliated clubs. But this year we haven’t got a single ticket or invite," said Rajput.
The MCA, it may be recalled had hosted 10 matches for the IPL in the first edition in 2008. For that, it had to delay Wankhede Stadium’s renovation. "It’s demeaning in a way. The MCA has not been taken into confidence," said Rajput.
